Thinking about the wind, we made windmills to play with.

You will need:

• Squares of paper
• Cardboard tubes from cling film or kitchen roll
• Straws
• Paper fasteners (split pins)
• Small circles of card
• Sharp scissors for making small holes

In advance (unless you have the confidence to do origami in front of the children), fold the squares of paper into windmill heads. I will post instructions on how to do this, but you can find plenty on the Internet if you search!

The children should decorate the windmill heads.

Cut a hole in the middle of the windmill head big enough to fit a straw through. Make a smaller hole near the end of the tube and in a circle of card.

Cut a short length of straw (less than 1cm). Take a split pin and push it through the circle of card, then through the length of straw, then push the windmill head onto the straw, and put the end of the split pin through the hole in the tube. Fold the ends of the split pin back and your windmill is ready to blow!

The straw should enable the windmill to rotate freely, and the circle of card stops the straw from falling off the split pin.
